Accountancy for UK creative freelancers, studios and agencies
Brand strategy, illustration, copywriting, website design and build
An accountancy brand built for creatives
The3Key is a UK accountancy, set up in 2022, for creative freelancers, studios, agencies, production houses and contractors. Its own line says it plainly: accountants for creatives who’d rather be creating.
The firm was built for that audience and looked like every firm that was not: navy, handshake photos and a paragraph about proactive advice. We gave it a brand, a tax man character and a website that speaks to creatives. Conversions rose 77%.

01 The challenge
Looking like every accountant was the problem
Creatives expect accountants to be dull at best. Most firms confirm it in the first second, with navy branding, stock photos and a promise of proactive advice. When every firm looks like that, a buyer has no reason to pick one. The3Key had a real difference, a firm built for creatives, and nothing on the old site showed it.

02 The idea
An accountancy website that looks nothing like accountancy
We designed against the category. Bright mint where the sector is navy, and illustration where every other firm uses stock photos. The logo turns its 3 into a key. Six cards under Who it’s for let each kind of creative find themselves first, then the services that fit. A creative landing on the site knows within a second that it was made for them.

03 The tax man
The tax man, given a face
Stock photography was never going to work on people who make images for a living. A custom illustration system carries the brand instead, led by a character for the tax man himself. He turns up in a glasses and moustache disguise, with a traffic cone on his head and a Kick me note on his face. The thing the audience dreads becomes something the firm can joke about.

My business has grown significantly whilst partnering with Grid, and I genuinely believe this would not have been possible without the brand vision Grid helped mould.

04 Off the screen
A brand that works away from the website
The illustration system was built to travel. The tax man appears on tote bags, a pin badge and a t-shirt, and on direct mail that tells clients “We’ve got your back”. Even the toilet sign carries the voice: “Nothing you do in here is worse than your tax.” For an audience that judges everything by how it is made, these small pieces do as much convincing as the website.

05 Service pages
Accountancy services explained one page at a time
Creatives come with specific worries: irregular income, late invoices, what counts as an expense when the studio is a spare room. The copy answers them plainly, the claim first and the detail underneath. Each service has a page and a hero of its own, from payroll and self assessment to annual accounts and company formation, so a visitor knows in seconds whether they are in the right place.
06 Proof
An accountancy website that lifted conversions by 77%
Every page ends in the same place. The footer gives the tax man one last line, Don’t run from the tax man, and a single button: Talk to us. Wherever a visitor stops reading, the next step is the same. The new website lifted conversions by 77%, and in March 2026 it earned an Awwwards Honorable Mention, which tells creatives this firm cares how things are made.
