From an idea to a travel perk staff actually use

Offwork is an employee travel perk. Employers pay into a monthly travel fund, and staff spend it on flights from more than 140 airlines and over two million places to stay.

It began as an idea, with no brand, product or website. We shaped the proposition, then designed the brand, the employee and admin app and the website as one system: credible to HR leaders and finance teams, and simple for the staff using it.

01 The challenge

A new perk in a crowded benefits market

HR teams are offered a long list of perks, from gym passes to discount schemes. Offwork had to explain a new one in a few seconds: the employer pays in each month, and staff turn that money into time away. Three readers had to say yes: the HR lead choosing it, the finance team paying for it and the employee using it. Any doubt over cost or value would slow the launch.

02 The idea

An employee benefits app where points become trips

Every pound an employer pays in shows up as points, and the app keeps that one number in front of each person. New points land on the dashboard, destinations are suggested from what the balance can already cover, and every stay and flight is priced in points. If a trip costs more, the difference goes on a card in the same step, and a confirmed booking ends on You're going Offwork!

03 Admin tools

Gifting points and setting up a company

Team leaders get their own side of the product. Gifting is a single card: pick a team member, add a note and send the points, with the budget updating as you go. Monthly limits sit behind it, so nobody needs an approval or an expense claim. Setting up a company takes three steps: add the team from one data file, set up payment and land in the admin dashboard.

04 The website

An employee benefits website that sells to two audiences

HR leaders want the commercial case. Their teams want to know where they can go. The homepage carries both. It opens on The perk that takes your team further, shows the real dashboard, the benefits and the airlines and hotel groups behind the bookings, and answers cost and carbon offsetting in plain words. It ends on one question, Ready to help your team go Offwork?, and keeps the same order on a phone.

The go to team.

05 The brand

A brand built for launch, with a cast of its own

The wordmark links its double f into one shape, and the palette runs from dark green through light green to cream: confident enough for an HR buyer, relaxed enough for a booking confirmation. Hand-drawn characters take the place of stock photos, jumping for a booking, high-fiving over a gift and peeking round a login. The same small cast appears in the app and on the website, so both feel like one product.

06 Results

Results: a travel perk people sign up for

Offwork launched with a clear proposition and a brand, app and website ready for its first customers. It has reached 6,774 users with a 19% sign-up rate. For a new name in a crowded benefits market, that shows the idea makes sense to both sides it was built for: the companies paying in and the staff booking time away.

FAQs

Questions about employee benefits app design

Offwork is a travel perk platform. Employers pay into a monthly travel fund, and every team member sees it as points they can spend on flights and hotels. Grid Design created the brand, the employee and admin product, and the website from scratch, starting from an idea with no brand, product or website.

The employee app keeps one number in front of people: their points balance. Pending points land on the dashboard, destinations are suggested from what they can already afford, and every stay and flight is priced in points. If a trip costs more, the difference goes on a card in the same step.

Team leaders get their own side of the product. Gifting points is a single card: choose a team member, add a note and send, with the budget updating as you go. Monthly limits sit behind it, so managers can reward people without approvals or expense claims.

The difference goes on a card in the same step. Nobody is stopped at checkout or sent off to claim it back later. The employee picks a stay, tops up the points difference by card and lands on the You're going Offwork! confirmation, with the points and the card payment handled together.

Offwork has 6,774 users and a 19% sign-up rate. It started as an idea with no brand, product or website yet, and we designed all three from scratch: the brand, the employee and admin app, and the website that explains the perk to HR leaders and to their teams.
